Curriculum Guide for Teaching Community College English
Teaching for Social Change

Welcome

After teaching Developmental English for more than 25 years, I decided to create a website where I could pass along what I’ve learned about teaching, as well as share curricula I’ve developed. As someone who rejects the laws of private ownership in general, I encourage anyone who likes what they read here to lift it and use it as extensively as they like. (Just don’t claim it as your own. That would be wrong.) I believe in teaching as a subversive act where teachers can help students understand the system in which we live and empower them to be agents of change.

On this site you’ll find an introduction that describes how I arrived at my political and pedagogical approach to teaching, my philosophy of education, as well as a general course design for Developmental English that has proven to be successful for me. You’ll also find three essays (one of which is considerably more scholarly that the others) that deal with core aspects of teaching developmental English in the community college setting (also fully applicable to teaching English in High School). You’ll also find three complete curricula, each using a different core text.

I hope that many of you will be able to make use of what you find here.
